The ultimate low-tech friction hack: Zipper pockets

31.07 11:04 | u/stelian3
i realized a few months ago that almost every time i pulled my phone out while walking, waiting in a queue, or sitting around, i wasn't even making a conscious choice. my hand just glided into my pocket on complete autopilot. i ended up getting a couple pairs of pants with zipped pockets recently, mostly just for running so my stuff wouldn't slide out. but after wearing them casually for a few days, i noticed something weird happening.every time i got hit with that 3 second surge of micro boredom, my hand would do the usual automatic reach. except this time, instead of grabbing smooth glass, my fingertips hit a metal zipper pull. That tiny physical bump completely breaks the muscle memory loop. having to actually pause, locate the zip, and pull it open forces my brain back online for a split second. in that split second, i usually realize "wait, i literally have no reason to look at my screen right now" and i just drop my hand. plus an unexpected bonus is that i stopped doing that paranoid thigh slap to check if my phone was still in my pocket, which used to trigger the urge to pull it out anyway. it sounds stupidly simple because it's literally just pants, but adding that tiny physical barrier stopped almost all my mindless checking in public. curious if anyone else ended up using weird low-tech physical barriers like this. obviously when you are at home just put the phone in another room, but when you are away you should try this.
