looking into switching away from my cell phone and offloading some of its functions into other tools, and I am kind of getting driven mad by all the moralistic language surrounding dumb phones. I mean even the desc of this subreddit "join the revolution and enjoy the simple life!" is a bit odd to me, particularly the "enjoy the simple life" bit. I think its great if your worldview means you see simplicity and "slower" life as better and tools that encourage it to be morally "superior" if that works for you but its just the way a lot of dumb phone talk blanket assumes everyone sees it this way that bothers me? I do not see simplicity and slowness as like,, inherently better than complexity and busyness and it's definitely not "more natural" or something like that. ill grant that the constant race towards productivity is pretty loathsome but I think people seem to act as if all busyness and complexity is the capitalistic "productive" (extractive) kind? idk. like I hate Facebook and I hate surveillance capitalism and I hate exploitative design but I don't really see connectivity and complex digital tools as inherently and unfixably morally corrupting the way many people in this sphere seem to? I don't have any interest in "slowing down" so to speak. does anyone else feel similarly? if you don't, why do you feel strongly that words like simplicity, slowness and inconvenience should be inherently associated with a dumbphone lifestyle/ seems almost like a lot of it is related to how we culturally view addiction as a moral failing...?so people who come here to break their social media addiction subconsciously treat dumb phones as a return to good morality? idk I am curious to hear what others think.
