So I just got back from the new Spiderman movie, and I have many thoughts. First of all, the casting of Sadie Sink as Jean Grey was GREAT. She had an excellent portrayal, and did an incredible job of conveying emotion. Secondly, the Punisher x Spiderman combo was awesome. The pairing of these two characters was perfect, and I love the relationship they build throughout the movie as two people who have experienced tragic losses. The most meaningful part of this film to me was Peter re-navigating his relationships with Ned and MJ. Though I saw it coming, I was mortified when MJ “remembering” Peter was Jean inhabiting MJs mind. I thought Tom Holland did a phenomenal job of representing the deep hurt of loving someone so much that can’t love you back. “I don’t love you, I don’t even know you” broke my heart. Peter and MJ had such a special and beautiful relationship in the prior films and it was like a punch to the gut to see how much they were in different worlds in this one. Towards the end I appreciated how there was clearly something still there, at least a little bit. The last scene of the film was the most emotional to me. No notes. Made me cry. Beautiful and meaningful. My biggest issue with this movie was 1. How long the credits before the post credit scene was, and 2. How lame the post credit scene was. Overall, (probably a controversial take) 5/5 movie, and probably my favorite of Tom’s as Spiderman.
